WordPress scales well, and probably far better than the perception. I will say that it’s always a bit of a challenge to acquire expert-level knowledge when you’ve already put the oft-repeated basics behind you (caching, cdn, innodb, etc, and the more recent additions to that variety of advice include nginx and fastcgi cache). I reached a point where I realized it was far more cost-effective to invest in more hardware than to spend huge amounts of time squeezing small performance gains out of a theme or plugin’s wp queries at the subatomic level.
